I'm Back!

My apologies, it’s been months since I wrote my last blog. So much has transpired in my life so I’m just going to dive right in.

Over the past year and a half, after being appointed by Governor Larry Hogan, I’ve had the pleasure of serving as the Director of the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism. I’m extremely excited to tell you that I resigned from that position in May 2019 to return to SAFE. Since my resignation, whenever I tell someone I know longer serve in that position their reaction is usually “WHAT” with a puzzled look on their face. I understand that this sounds ridiculous to many but here is why I resigned, I made the decision and commitment to bet on myself and my foundation. During my time at the GOSV, I’ve met a lot of great people and gained a lot of valuable knowledge that will allow me to take SAFE to new levels. Among those lessons, the simplest yet most significant one is to find a way to always add value.

In adding value, I’ve set an ambitious goal of opening a new SAFE Center, which will focus on workforce development. With the support and commitment of the Building for God Community Foundation and many others, we are striving to open the new center in September 2020. Many have seen the headlines Baltimore City has been making, however it’s the individuals with the passion to see change that collectively can solve many of the city’s issues. Through our workforce development center, we will be conducting what I call “real” community development which is providing the residents who currently live in underserved communities with the resources and opportunities to gain employment to support themselves, their families, and their community. The impact of this model will eventually reach throughout the city as we continue growing.

As I said this is a very ambitious goal, which won’t be achieved without the support of you and many other like-minded individuals. One person can truly make a difference by simply making the decision to get involved. I’m challenging you to get involved. How I Got Here

As for the “How I Got Here” project, I will be forever grateful for LinkedIn capturing my story. It was the first time I’ve ever heard my dad speak about the impact my injury had on him. My dad has always been the rock for my family and never had the time to process his feelings because he was so focused on doing whatever was needed that day by day to get me and my family through this ordeal. It wasn’t until this interview that he openly talked about my injury, which is why he became so emotional. I won’t write more about this because the video captures everything perfectly. After watching please email me and let me know your thoughts.

BET on Yourself

For those of you reading this who have been pondering about making a big discussion to start a new career, business, a nonprofit, a program, or implementing an idea you have, I'm encouraging you to do it.  I recommend starting by weighing all your options and understanding what the impact of your decision will be. After having a clear understanding, I recommend becoming a student and read every book you can and research as much as possible (this should be ongoing). Next, write out a plan that answers the questions, why it's important, how will you implement it, what's the time frame to implement it, and what can you do to start today? After this exercise, if you decide to move forward, post this plan somewhere you can see it daily and go all in with 110% effort. You will hit bumps and encounter roadblocks along your journey but use these to grow. Ask yourself, what can I learn from this and how I can use it moving forward? Then keep pushing. Bet on yourself, believe in your abilities and I'll see you on the other end of success!
